A camper in Australia has posted a clip of a wild animal rummaging around their tent, with the small but potentially dangerous creature reminding them they aren’t “safe from anything.”
On October 30, TikTok user @elaaaaaaaaaad shared the video of something wriggling around in a tent, showing a small opening that the animal presumably made to get inside. After a short time, the person recording the video kicks the tent, and the creature emerges from inside, revealing itself to be a wombat.
“When you live in Australia, you’re never really safe from anything,” the poster wrote in the caption of the video, which has received 3.3 million views and more than 500,000 likes.
Although wombats may look harmless to some, they can attack humans when they feel threatened. According to Aussie Animals, wombats fiercely and aggressively defend their burrows.
They have strong limbs and powerful claws, which can pose a threat to people. The animal is native to southern and eastern Australia, according to Animal Kingdom, and is part of the marsupial family of animals, which also includes kangaroos and wallabies.
Camping is a popular pastime in Australia. In 2023, 15.3 million Australians took caravan and camping trips, Tourism Research Australia reported.
On TikTok, users debated the harmfulness of wombats in the viral video’s comments section.
“[It is] probably one of the most harmless creatures we have,” one viewer wrote, while another said, “Wait till everyone realizes wombats have nearly killed people.”
“For the non Aussie. This beast here is a literal tank. If you hit it with your car it may as well be a concrete pylon. And it’ll walk away from the crash. Your car will not. It’d likely kill a bear,” a user said.
“It’s only a wombat dude be nice to it and give him a cuddle to say sorry,” another added.
“Aren’t wombats like the friendliest animal in Australia?” a commenter said.
“I was TERRIFIED that it was going to be some sort of mega spider,” another wrote.
As the country is known for its dangerous wildlife, one user said, “You have to be in a whole other level to CAMP in AUSTRALIA.”
